Take the blue pill…

W Boyd Taylor

Maybe I should have heeded that advice but no… So here I am a guy who has developed software for over 30 years for someone else. Now I am going to do something for me. My hobby so to speak is drinking wine, aged wine. A while back I made a goal to drink 10 year old wine most of the time. After “doing the math” I realized that to sustain such a habit I would be acquiring a significant number of bottles. And most cheap wine does not age well. Then I had a nightmare about my house burning down and trying to tell my Insurance company about all this wine I had. After all I did add a rider to the policy to cover these things. But the truth is The insurance company wants an itemized list. A list that is constantly changing. So I am setting out on journey to create an app on my phone that I can scan bottles into my inventory and scan them out when I drink them. That inventory would be backed up to the cloud in one of my personal file stores. Finally should disaster hit I could print the itemized list my insurance company would want. Of course it would be nice if scanning a bottle would give you information about the winery, tasting notes (over the years) etc. Well you see I have a lot of ideas so as this journey continues I will share my trials, tribulations, and victories. I am a geek so most of my blog will be about the nuts and bolts of this thing.

It is my hope that one day when it is good enough I would put it in the App stores (yes, if I am successful, I will some day venture into the Apple universe) and share it with like minded individuals. And I realize there are other “collectors” out there that would love to have an inventory system that would work as easily as my dream. I will keep an eye on this and try and isolate the core engine so that it will become extensible for other “collection domains”.
